Why is copper important?
Copper is an essential trace nutrient to many plants and animals and is one of the few metals to naturally occur as an uncompounded mineral. Copper is very soft and thus malleable, and it has a protective effect against corrosion. As copper-ions kill algae, copper is sometimes referred to as an algicide. Used for centuries to sanitize water, copper exhibits high thermal and electrical conductivity. Copper-based solutions have been used to combat algae-related problems in swimming pools and natural lakes and ponds. In fact, a reliable method of sanitizing water without boiling or filtering involves letting water stand in a copper container at normal temperatures. Copper is relatively safe and is a needed micronutrient in our diets.
